Originally built in 1908, McDaniel Elementary School is a historic and functioning component of the Springfield, MO, school district. However, its age had left it in need of improvements in order to be compliant with physical and code regulations. H Design renovated the school with the main addition of a new stair and elevator tower, accessibility upgrades, and technology enhancements for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.
Because of the building's significant historical presence within the community and a limited construction budget, emphasis was placed on creating a cost efficient renovation that would not deter from the building's original architectural style. To ensure that the exterior would blend without highlighting or attracting attention, H Design utilized similar building materials, repetition of brick patterns, and simple vertical massing. Additionally, the program of both McDaniel School and the requirements of the state and historical board were met without sacrificing or straining the structure's intent or presence within the neighborhood.
